Varsity football opened up their season at home against the Santa Barbara Dons on Friday, August 31. There was a massive barbecue on the outdoor basketball courts, the band played their spirit songs, and Mr. Mitchell was cracking jokes on the microphone.
At kick-off, the fans were excited and the band was pounding but that was as rowdy as it ever became. Santa Barbra scored first on a 33 yard touchdown pass and never looked back. Santa Barbara went on to score two more touchdown before halftime, making the game 21-0.
At 8:30, soon after the second half began the stadium lights went off, forcing the referees to pause the game. After 15 minutes of darkness, the lights came back on and the players took to the field.
The Dons continued their unanswered scoring streak, making the score 35-0.
With 26.2 seconds left, quarterback Zack Bialobos led the team to their first score of the season, a 13 yard pass to tight end Jared Forman.
Varsity football’s second game will be against San Marcos, Friday September 7th at home.
