Placing as best high school newspaper at the LA Press Club’s 56th SoCal Journalism Awards on June 29, Highlights beat out Daniel Pearl Magnet High School’s The Pearl Post for the second year in a row.
In addition, all three student entrants placed against college-aged competitors. Sports co-editor Jackson Prince took second place for his blog The Jackson Fives, in addition to taking first place in Feature Writing for his piece “Get back to your own side of the generation gap, Mom.”
“Jackson Prince’s mom should be proud – her son uses humor, history, irony, sarcasm and alarming levels of insight in this ‘witty and big- hearted’ piece,” the LA Press Club wrote in their comments.
Editor-in-chief Mabel Kabani took third place in News Writing for her 2013 article “Ongoing investigation of prostitution business continues In Beverly Hills“. Sports editor Arman Zadeh took third place in the Best Photography category for his sports photography.
“It is always really great to see the students on Highlights recognized for their hard work,” adviser Gaby Herbst said. “I’m especially proud to see the journalistic efforts of high school students recognized among some very prestigious collegiate journalism students and programs.”
Highlights will resume publication on the web in August, and will distribute its first print edition of the new school year in September.
