“Imitation Game” chronicles the creation of a machine that not only changed people, but changed technology as well. The film tells the little-known story of the creation of Turing machines, otherwise known as computers.
Benedict Cumberbatch (Alan Turing) is an awkward yet genius mathematician who first shows the audience his blunt personality and confidence at a job interview at the M16 Headquarters in England. When Turing is about to be turned away, he says “Enigma” to the commander who is interviewing him. The commander, surprised at Turing’s knowledge of the term, hires him for the job. Enigma is the name of the secret code used by the Germans during World War II. It was thought that Enigma was an unbreakable machine, but that wouldn’t stop a team of six men from trying.
Turing soon leads the group in solving Enigma, promptly firing two members and holding tryouts to replace them. One of the two people chosen is a woman named Joan Clarke, played by Keira Knightley. Clarke becomes Turing’s most trusted worker, and they continue to support each other despite the many failures of Turing’s machine. The team’s trust and compassion for each other, not to mention their sheer genius, comes to a climax when they finally crack Enigma, making for the movie’s most exciting and heartwarming scene.
“Imitation Game” keeps us on the edge of our seats while celebrating what Turing taught us. Despite the many difficulties he faced throughout his life, which is that “sometimes it’s the very people who no one imagines anything of who do the things no one can imagine.”
