The girls varsity soccer team partnered with the Tower Cancer Research Foundation (TCRF) in their fundraising event Kick for a Cure, which raised $1,400 through food sales and donation forms
TCRF is a non-profit based in Beverly Hills which funds innovative cancer research and provides support for families affected by the disease. They have raised over $25 million since their founding in 1996.
“I think it’s great that we were able to play this game for such an important cause. It feels really good to know that, by playing this game, we are helping others and raising money for such an incredible organization,” sophomore midfielder Dani Elitzur said.
Coach Ryan Franks was impressed with, but certainly not surprised by, his team’s motivation to give back.
“As the coach I couldn’t be more proud of this team for coming together and doing a community service to make a difference. But then again, nothing surprises me with this group. It’s been an incredible first half of the season,” Franks said.
The squad played some of their best soccer of the year and defeated Marlborough 3-0. The win bumped the squad’s record to 7-2-3, but also proved that they could handle the more competitive teams on the remainder of their schedule.
“Marlborough is a strong team and rather than stepping back from the challenge, we came together and dominated the entire game. I think we proved that we can take on tough opponents, maintain our composure and win all at the same time,” senior captain Maytal Sarafian said.
Elitzur led in the scoring column with two goals, while senior forward Tess Reinhardt added another.
“It was a great all-around performance by our team and it was great that everyone was able to contribute throughout the game,” Elitzur said.
Much of the team had been touched by cancer in some way, making the fundraiser even more special and personal
“Cancer is something that so many of us within the team have been affected by in one way or another,” Franks said.
