Service Learning held its annual staff karaoke at lunch on Monday, April 29. The event featured Nicole Cramer, Bryan Herbold, a duo of Kalia Scheiner and Jeremiah Williams, Graham Lockett, Mr. Terry and Jane Wortman.

As well as providing a fun event for both the students and faculty, staff karaoke works to raise money for A Gift for Teaching, a charity that works with underprivileged classrooms to buy more school supplies for them.

Cramer sang, “Me and Bobby McGee” by Janis Joplin, Herbold performed “Kiss Me Quick” by Elvis Presley Scheiner and Williams duoed in “Balbeli Oto” by Kobi Peretz Lockett sang “I’ll Make a Man out of you” as featured in the movie ‘Mulan’ Terry chose to do “Bust a Move” by Young MC and Wortman performed “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell.

Service Learning plans to host staff karaoke next year again due to each year’s success with the event.

“At first staff karaoke was just a way for our school to come together and have some fun. But then we learned about about a foundation called A Gift for Teaching,” junior Simon Hedvat said. “When we realized that Service Learning could do so much more to help the community with the success of staff karaoke we were very excited and determined to continue our efforts every year with the event.”

The teachers who sing at staff karaoke volunteer for the event and many are recurring performers such as  Lockett and  Cramer.

“I saw Mr. Lockett perform ‘I’ll Make a Man Out of You’ and it was well worth going to staff karaoke. He was so entertaining and it was really fun seeing my chemistry teacher in that light,” junior Simonna Krichevsky said. “I think that it made me feel closer to him as a person because I got to see him having fun and doing something for the students. My friends and I all really enjoyed his performance the most by far and thought that the song choice was very well picked.”

At the end of the show all the singers performed a group song which was “Sweet Caroline,” by Neil Diamond, leaving the school in excitement for next year’s staff karaoke.
