Going into the game, the Normans were coming off a week-long spring break.
“I feel pretty good coming off spring break and having our last practice a week and a half ago is kind of scary,” Senior co-captain Sarabeth Tansey said. “I know we’re all excited.”
The Nitros started the game strong, scoring the first goal 19 seconds into the game and going on a 4-0 run in the opening five minutes. The Normans scored their first goal of the game after 10 minutes when sophomore midfielder Emmy Hayes put a shot in the back of the net.
“I think our team played really well when we were passing,” Hayes said after the game. “I think defensively we were staying a little too deep, so they had a couple open shots on goal. We can work on passing the ball down the field to get a quicker transition.”
In the final minutes of the first half, senior co-captain Abby Kolko scored a hat trick, scoring three goals in nine minutes. The half ended with the Normans trailing 4-12.
Kolko opened up the second half with another goal. The Normans picked up steam in the second half and had a pair of goals in the 11th minute of the half. This was not enough to stop Glendale from scoring, though, and the Normans took their sixth loss of the season.
After the game, Sam Kolko, an alum who took over coaching in the second half, had some words about what the girls should be doing to improve for the second half of the season.
“They did well. We played against a really good team,” Sam Kolko said. “Moving on, I think we need to get the girls running more, get them more in shape because they have not been doing the condition part of practice. We need to start conditioning them.”
Junior Emilie Gibbons discussed what the team should be doing in order to improve and get better as the girls look forward to the rest of the schedule. Gibbons, a rookie on the team, thinks that a lack of communication has been a large factor in their losses.
“We need to improve on our communication. I think we have to learn to get on people that we think are about to be passed to,” Gibbons said. “We just need to be faster as well. Every game you learn something.”
The girls travel to El Segundo on Friday. This will be their second meeting against the Eagles this season after losing their first match 16-15 in overtime.
