Nerd’s paradise speeds through the year

Zachary Fouladian, Staff Writer
There has been a recent onslaught of much-anticipated and much-enjoyed video games and movies, an onrush that doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon. From November’s Skyrim to the recent Avenger’s movie to the upcoming Batman and Spiderman films, there’s been a lot to enjoy and just as much to look forward to for those interested in the nerdier side of life.
Of course, the term “nerdier” is a very loose description. Anyone can be a nerd about anything, from teddy bears to basketball to children’s television shows about magical ponies, but the focus here is on fantasy and comic-book based movies and games. Much of the popularity, too, comes from the coincidence of the movies being  long in production or featuring popular characters. Mix that in with quality and quantity, and the past year has been a winner.
Most recently, as mentioned, have been the newest additions to the Elder Scrolls games, Skyrim, and the even more recent Diablo 3 game. Around the same time came some other games, such as new Legend of Zelda games.

Senior Joseph Steingold said, “[My] favorite game was probably The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword because personally I’m a huge Zelda fan,” while junior Arya Boudaie said he was most excited for the handheld Ocarina of Time.

There were some let downs as well. Senior David Ghermezi didn’t enjoy the Avengers movie. He said, “It was what I originally expected. The story was bland and unimportant. The entire movie was just a fan service for people who like comic book characters because they are comic book characters, and nothing more.” Steingold agreed, and added in that the new Assassin’s Creed was a disappointment as well.
But the future is looking golden, with nearly a dozen sequels lined up. Ghermezi expressed his excitement for Borderlands 2, New Super Mario Brothers 2, and Luigi’s Mansion 2, while Steingold is looking forward to the new Batman movie as well as Pikmin 2.
In addition to all of this, Ghermezi would like to see “a new R-rated comedy” or “a new PG-13 or higher [rated] movie with an excellent story.”
The future looks bright for those who are interested, so don your cape, mask or tights, and get ready for a ride.
