Girls’ varsity golf has started to turn around their season this week, winning their first two matches of the season. The girls played three matches in a row, but despite the heavy workload the team was victorious. They won their first two matches of the year this week, sweeping SAMO 2-0, but they were also defeated by North Torrance.

Going into the week, the team had a 0-6 record, caused by their two close losses to open the season.

“Our first two matches against Marlborough [School] really sucked the air out of us,” co-captain Rachel Lee said. “It’s hard to be motivated after losing such close matches.”

The first match of the week was on Tuesday at home against SAMO. SAMO did not have the required amount of girls to compete (five) forcing them to surrender the match.

“Although it was our first win of the season it wasn’t how we wanted it to be. But a win’s a win!” co-captain Lydia Choi said.

On Thursday the team went to the Links at Victoria, a golf course, for their match against North Torrance. Choi shot a 33, but it was not enough to lead her team to victory.

“North Torrance was a little sad, but we kept our heads up because we know we can beat the next team,” senior Jessica Roberts said.

On Thursday the girls went to SAMO’s home course, Penmar Municipal Golf Course, and SAMO had enough girls to compete this time around. Lead by Choi, shooting 2-under-par, Beverly went on to get their first contested win of the year.

“It felt really good because they are our rivals. We really wanted to beat them the right way not by disqualification,” Roberts said.

The team is hoping to build on this momentum and turn around their 2-7 record.

“Whenever we win a match it makes us more pumped for the next one. We play better,” said Roberts.

The girls will face Torrance next week; at home on Tuesday, and away on Thursday. The away match will take place at Los Verdes Golf Course.
