Los Angeles is filled with panini-style cafes and boutique sandwich shops. However, there will always be a looming debate regarding two classics: Bay Cities Italian Deli and All About The Bread. As many of you know, nothing is better than the perfect sandwich. We decided to take the test to see which classic proved to be better.
Bay Cities

1571 Lincoln Blvd., Santa Monica

(323) 395-8279

When an Angelino-foodie thinks about a sandwich, one thing comes to mind: Bay Cities. The Santa Monica Italian market and deli has become a destination for sandwich connoisseurs from all over Los Angeles.

People wait in long lines to devour classics such as the Chicken Parmesan Sub, the Caprese Sandwich (Add prosciutto with the Don Lorenzo on the secret menu! and the most well known of them all: The Godmother. Filled with a variety of Italian meats and cheeses, The Godmother is a guilty pleasure. Served with “the works,” this sandwich includes spicy mustard, a mix of hot peppers, pickles, lettuce, tomato and Italian dressing.

It’s almost impossible not to love Bay Cities. In addition to a wide variety of Italian meat classics, Bay Cities is also known for its Vegetarian Sub, filled with fresh vegetables and a famous avocado spread. The shop also has imported Italian cookies and candies, as well as cheeses and prepared foods. Pair your sandwich with a cherry soda or a root beer and you’re good to go! Trust us, it’s worth the drive to Santa Monica.
All About The Bread

7111 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles

(323) 930-8989

Located on bustling Melrose, All About The Bread is a classic Italian sandwich cafe with modern influences. The cafe truly lives up to its name “All About The Bread.” The sandwich shop bakes its famous Italian bread every thirty minutes which makes All About The Bread unique and have great quality.

All About The Bread’s take on the Bay Cities classic, “The Godmother” is aptly titled, “The Godfather.” A heavenly combination of Italian meats: spicy capicola, mortadella, prosciutto di parma, ham, genoa salami and fresh provolone cheese, hot peppers and a signature spicy mustard. What makes this sandwich truly unique is the bread. Crisp crust, with a soft and light inside.

Other All About The Bread classics include the Meatball Sub, served with provolone and mozzarella, as well as the Caprese Sandwich filled with fresh basil and homemade pesto.

Bay Cities Proves To Be The Best

While both sandwiches proved to be delicious and quite filling, our favorite would have to be The Godmother at Bay Cities. This original sandwich is a classic and while All About The Bread’s interpretation came quite close, Bay Cities ended up winning our taste buds with its distinct taste and fresh ingredients.
