The annual band trip to Disneyland is happening this year on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Students from symphonic band, concert band and colorguard are all eligible to attend.
“I think the students are excited. It’s quite an honor to be participating in this program. I think it’s a special thing for our Beverly students to be able to perform there,” band director Bill Bradbury said.
The trip consists of a day spent enjoying the the rides at the park and, at night, performing and marching through Disneyland’s Main Street.
“I’ve gone on the Disneyland trip for the past three years. It’s definitely one of my favorite parts of the entire school year,” senior trumpet player Samаntha Kurtz said.
Band members must memorize a classic marching tune called “Strike Up the Band” and are tested in class in order to be allowed to partake in the trip.
“Memorizing ‘Strike up the Band’ hasn’t always been the easiest thing for me,” junior flautist Hans Ji laughed.
The band undergoes rigorous practice in order to prepare for the trip. On Mondays and Thursdays for two weeks prior, all members who wish to go to Disneyland must attend marching practice sessions from 3:15 to 5:15.
“The work you have to put it can be a little tiring. Memorizing ‘Strike Up the Band’ and going to marching practice takes up a lot of time,” Kurtz said. “But in the end it’s always worth it.”
