The girls varsity soccer team lost 0-2 to Culver City High School this past Wednesday, Jan. 24. The Normans fell to 2-3 in league, and the Centaurs are now 4-0-1.
Coach Ryan Franks sees positives from yesterday’s loss to Culver, mostly in the play of his defensive line.
“Strengths for our team this game were our two center defenders. Angela Bradbury has played outstanding all season,” Franks said. “She’s a converted center midfielder; she played midfield for us last year. This year, because of injuries and whatnot, we had to put her in the back line, and she has been really solid. She was the player of the game today for us.”
When asked, Bradbury said that before the game she plays music, and during the game she focuses on her specific role, in order to play as hard as she can.
“When I’m in the game, all I think about is not letting the ball in the back of our net and not letting anyone on the other team get past me,” Bradbury said. “To get ready, I stay focused during warm ups and listen to some music that will focus me on the game.”
However, there are some aspects of the game to work on, namely getting into defensive positions and closing in on the middle of the field, for future league games.
“I think what we can take away from this game is. First of all, Culver City played a really nice game. They play organized, so I tip my hat off to them. So, what we need to do is just sort of go over our defensive responsibilities a little bit more, because they had too much space, particularly in the midfield,” Franks said. “We just need to make sure next time we play them, we have a little bit more coverage in the center so they don’t have as much space to play out of.”
The team takes on Hawthorne High School away at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26.
