After months of preparation, the orchestra department’s annual fall concert will take place on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Horace Mann Auditorium. Initially, the concert was to take place on Nov. 19, but it was moved because of time conflicts with Horace Mann.
Sophomore Kate Kotlyar was in the Concert Orchestra last year, but plays in the Chamber Orchestra this year. The concert’s location makes Kotlyar nostalgic, as she previously used to perform in the Horace Mann orchestra in middle school.
“We’re performing at Horace Mann this year due to the construction in the Salter. It’s nostalgic but also kind of obnoxious because we have to haul all our instruments and what-not to Horace Mann. I play the bass so hauling that instrument isn’t fun,” Kotlyar said.
The extensive training that was put into the concert makes sophomore Jennifer Li feel more prepared for the upcoming orchestra concert than any of her previous concerts. Li feels nostalgic as well to be performing in the Horace Mann auditorium since she was in the middle school orchestra alongside Kotlyar.
“For the winter concert we have decided on most of the songs we’re performing. We practice these songs every day and we’ve had quizzes on them,” Li said. “I believe we also have after school rehearsals coming up.”
The orchestra conductor Bill Bradbury thought the only real challenge they’d faced while preparing was choosing which songs they wanted to perform, but they settled the issue by selecting pieces as a group. Bradbury chose not to feature any holiday music because they had previously scheduled the concert for Nov. 19, which at the time was too early for holiday music.
“It will not be a holiday thing, but we anticipate doing both String Orchestra selections and full orchestra selections with the Chamber Orchestra,” Bradbury said. “One thing we’re doing differently is that we’re going to combine both string orchestras and actually do part of the first movement to ‘Beethoven’s Fifth,’”
All in all, both Bradbury and his orchestra students are looking forward to the concert they’ve spent time preparing for.
“I’m honestly pretty excited for the upcoming concert. Mr. Bradbury has some pretty dope stuff planned,” Kotlyar said. “In general, I like performing because it’s really fun to entertain an audience, so I’m pretty excited.”
The orchestra concert will take place on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Horace Mann Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased at the door or from the student store.
