Every student who competed in the Spring Drama Teachers Association of Southern California (DTASC) Shakespeare competition advanced to the finals.

On April 17, 23 students from the high school submitted video entries for the competition.  For the entries, students filmed themselves participating in different aspects of Shakespeare productions, from monologues to costumes.

Senior Max Love, who competed in the monologue category, performed a segment of Hamlet and of Much Ado about Nothing. He was inspired by his “love” of acting and his admiration of Shakespeare to compete.

Because he wanted the opportunity to compete in one of his first competitions during the pandemic,  senior Gabe Green decided to enter into the Shakespeare contest. He enjoyed performing as Macbeth in his act.

“My seventh to eigth grade self would [have] been stoked to get this role,” Green said. “I have a lot of love for the scene itself and how vulnerable Macbeth is in it.”

Overall, Love was satisfied with the competition results.

“I was very excited to see that I moved on, as I had no expectations when I sent in my monologues,” Love said. “I’m very happy they liked my work.”

Green was also overjoyed to advance to the final round, which gave him a sense of accomplishment.

“I was ecstatic,” Green said. “It’s the first time I’ve went this far in a competition, so I felt super proud of all the work I had put in. Also, it gave me a lot of motivation to keep giving all I can in other aspects of life [and] school.”
