The girls varsity basketball team won its away game on Monday, Feb. 20, against Big Bear High School, allowing the team to advance from the second round of the 2017 CIF Southern Section Girls Basketball Division 4A Playoffs to quarterfinals.
The team defeated Big Bear 47-38, and the victory felt sweet for all of the team.
“This victory was an amazing feeling because we are determined to work hard and win. We also did not want to lose after having to drive all the way up to Big Bear. That would have been an even bigger upset,” captain Megan Saghian said.
Before the game, the team made sure to stay mentally tough and prepared.
“More than anything, it was mental preparation before the game. We had to realize that in order to win, we need to be playing for each other, not ourselves,” Saghian said. “Also, the commute to both Catalina and Big bear has made us closer, which translated on the court.”
Small forward Julianne Araullo felt that the team showed unity on the court during the game.
“We showed great teamwork, but we really pulled through in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter. Everyone was determined to win this game, and I think communication is key to having a successful team,” Araullo said.
For the quarterfinal game, the team plans on continuing to stay mentally tough and play with great effort.
“The talent is there,” Saghian said. “It’s just a matter of how we display it and work as a unit.”
