Associated Student Body (ASB) saved the day on a very special Thursday of February, Valentine’s Day. Handing out warm hand-written cards along with See’s candies filled the hearts of many.
Valentine’s day grams were available for students who wanted to give their close friends a small present without having to prepare anything.
Freshman ASB Commissioner Eli Cohen said, “The purpose of these Valentine’s day grams was for people that wanted to do something for that special guy or girl. If they didn’t know what to prepare for them, we help out by delivering a little card along with a candy for just three dollars.”
Class of 2013 President, Nathan Cohen, also mentioned how this was a great way for students to convey one’s feelings for another.
“Sometimes, students are too afraid to approach their crush, so this is a perfect way to show how much they care for that one person,” he said.
Effects of Valentine’s day grams
These grams were meant to be given to one’s love, but they also helped make friends’ relationship become much closer than before.
“I’ve received several this year and it always made me feel loved by my friends. It not only makes me happy, but makes the bond between us stronger,” Freshman Jennifer Zhang said.
In addition to this, some students are attracted to purchasing these grams in order to make someone close to them feel important.
Sophomore Kathleen Cho said, “Students purchase grams so that they could feel like they’re giving something special to their friends on that particular holiday.”
Although it may seem like a “cheap” gift, it has a deep meaning to those who receive them from their friends.
“Even though it’s just a piece of paper and candy, I felt really happy when I received one,” said Cho.
According to senior Jasmin Jahadar, these grams are often purchased so that they can “look good” in front of others as well.
She also said, “People buy it because it’s sweet! They also sometimes just plan with their friends to get each other grams so they both get it.”
Additionally, these gram signifies how much a certain person is worth to them and can be also given to those who have had a long-time crush.
Zhang commented, “Students send candy grams to each other to show much they love them, whether it’s a friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, or even their secret lover.”
At the end of the day, giving these grams resulted in cheering up their friends or simply maintaining their already healthy, strong relationship.
Freshman Junhee Cho said, “Students are buying the Valentine’s gram to help a friend enjoy their day and most importantly have fun with their friends.”
The big problem
Despite all these positive effects of paying money for them, the price was overly expensive for several students.
Cho said, “Even though I purchased these grams, I feel like that they are way overpriced.”
Students also suggested a lower, ideal price for these grams.
“I feel that spending three dollars on a candy gram is a little too extreme, and it should be one dollar like the holiday gram,” said Zhang.
Though it enticed a horde of students during nutrition and lunch breaks, the price of the grams began to be a big issue for them. Several students felt that their money can be used elsewhere rather than using it for Valentine’s grams.
“I think that it’s a waste of three dollars because you could go on three bus trips with that money instead,” freshman Lia Yeh said.
ASB’s use of the profits
“The profit that we have earned will be later used for another project that students will look forward to,” Cohen said.
The Valentine’s gram was a successful event that benefitted both the students and ASB. While students of all grades had the opportunity to confess their love or express their friendship, ASB earned profit for their upcoming project.
