On Wednesday, Jan. 22., Beverly’s girls varsity basketball team faced a challenging match against Culver High School, resulting in a score of 15-66.
Despite the outcome, the Normans walked out with their heads held high, instead focusing on the lessons to be learned from this game that will help them through the next.
From the stands, “Rebound! Rebound!” was chanted by parents and audience members whenever the opposing team scored. No matter the score, the Normans are always encouraged to support their teams no matter what.
Coach Adre Simmons comments on the team’s lack of defense this time around. He emphasized that “playing hard and defense is everything,” a lesson that reflects in this game’s outcome, and is sure to resonate with players in the future. Coach Simmons also highlights that the unity of players is of utmost importance on and off the court.
“We do a lot of team bonding activities, and I believe that it helps a lot with [our] mentality,” he said.
After a team huddle and wise words from Coach Simmons, Beverly faced Culver City in the second half, but unfortunately fell short in points.
But the Normans work to move forward from this game, and instead focus on what will prepare them for the next game.
Team Captain Megan Amirianfar reflects on pre-game rituals that help her for any competition:
“I like listening to music and watching endgame highlights,” she said, describing how it builds a sense of focus and calm.
Junior Hazel Nahouray reminds us that no matter the outcome, playing basketball is a privilege.
“I love having the opportunity to play competitively with girls who have become my family and a coach who strives to incorporate life lessons through the game,” she said.
