From Feb. 26 to March 1, Beverly’s theater program presented their winter play, “The Importance of Being Earnest” in room S205.
“The Importance of Being Earnest” is a comedic play written by Oscar Wilde that the TAW (Theater Arts Workshop) students in the theater program did a spin on.
Directed by Ms. Samantha Howard, the students spent months preparing for the play, from getting to understand their character to countless rehearsals, along with building of the set after school, which is made by students and Technical Theater director, Thomas Zoeschg.
The audience were offered period appropriate accessories before entry, such as fedoras and flapper headbands. When sat at a table, the waiters, played by students, offered complimentary cucumber sandwiches and tea. At the same time, cast members would walk around the room and stop by the tables to interact with the audience before the play began.
The play featured two different stages for the audience to enjoy, which added to the interactive aspect of the play. When walking into the other room, the audience gives a cast member a train ticket and walks through a room that was decorated to give the illusion of being on a train.
Throughout the play, the cast members asked various questions to the audience members, even calling out certain people, which got many laughs from the crowd.
The actors and actresses were phenomenal, their hard work and dedication to the program clearly shown, even though the cast members had to also begin rehearsing and studying lines for the spring musical the following month.
