Mr. Dan Moroaica, the US history teacher at Beverly began collecting comic books at the age of ten. Years later, his love for comic books sparks what he calls ‘Comic Book Wednesdays.’
“I remember my mom and I went to a store back then called WaldenBooks, and I found an X-Men comic book, and ever since then, I was obsessed,” Mr. Moroaica said.
Weekly visits to the bookstore led him to discover specialty stores, which offered a more comprehensive selection, and opened up a whole new world for him.
On every “Comic Book Wednesday,” Mr. Moroaica drives to his local comic book store in the city of Bellflower, California.
“They’re called Metropolis comics. The owner and I are friends, and they’ve been around for years and years!” Mr. Moroaica said.
In a given week, Mr. Moroaica can buy either between eight and 15 comic books. Once he buys the comic books, he takes a look at their action figures, another collection of his called, “Funko Pops”
“I have a pull list of books already waiting for me, usually, DC, Batman, Superman, but also some Marvel,” Mr. Moroaica said.
After purchasing comic books, Mr. Moroaica and his store friends will hang out to talk about new movies, new TV shows, storylines and even new comic books!
What piqued his interest was cartoons, specifically the Fox Show X-Men, an animated series, which is what got him into comics more than anything else.
“Now, why Wednesday? Well, there’s a new release date for everything. New movies are usually on Fridays. Comic books always come out on Wednesday.=,” Mr. Moroaica explained.
Mr. Moroaica always makes sure to go on Wednesdays so the new comics won’t run out! So for many years now, Wednesdays have been his day to trek to Metropolis Comics and have an island of fun.
Mr. Moroaica shares his excitement every Wednesday with the class and hopes this can be a long-term thing that he can keep up with in the future.
