MARCH 24– ASB held the annual talent show at the newly built El Rodeo Elementary. Performances included musical talent, stand-up comedy and even ventriloquism! Attendees at the end of the night were able to vote for their favorite performance along with the teachers judging.
Many of the performances were done by seniors like Naomi Strauss, who performed with her beloved puppet Lucy.
Strauss said she wanted to perform this year because she, “…really wanted to dedicate something to the seniors because of how sad and bittersweet I have been feeling about graduating soon.”
The talent show has been a favorite second-semester event for many seniors. Senior Charlotte George enjoys the talent show because it is a good event to bring the community together and celebrate the uniqueness of our school!
With Beverly’s Auditorium under construction, the event is usually shown at the Beverly Vista Middle School’s theater. This year, however, ASB’s Dance Company decided to have the occasion at El Rodeo after the nine-year-long construction project ended.
Mr. Nickolas Henggeler, the ASB Director, said, “A lot of them are El Rodeo Alum, and they wanted to use that auditorium since it’s brand new and state of the art.”
The theater had both a bottom and top level for the audience. On the top floor, there were areas where KBEV could live-stream the event for viewers at home.
Senior Sabrina Niku, the Senior Body President, said, “It was really emotional… I was really happy we got to have our last talent show there.”
Niku was a student at El Rodeo before the construction. She explains that going back to her elementary school was one of the highlights of her senior year.
At the end of the night, the results were in. The podium consisted of seniors Remy Javidzad on the piano, Alina Sanyzbay singing and the band Back in Autumn won first place with their heavy metal performance of “HOT TO GO!” by Chappell Roan.
Junior Jake Rubel is the vocalist, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for the band and explained, “Winning felt weird and definitely undeserved…Everyone performing that night had incredible talent… and… deserve[d] a medal of [their] own. However, a win is a win, and we are very grateful for both the opportunity and the experience.”
Rubel said choosing the song and changing the genre of it is something that heavy metal bands do, “Pushing the boundaries of our genre is part of our sound, and this was no different.”
Performing in front of so many people is a courageous thing to do, and we commend everyone who decides to push themselves out of their comfort zone to do so and create this fan-favorite event!
