Among over 240 schools, with 28 from out of state, and over 11,000 athletes, cross country represented the classic orange and black at the Woodbridge 3-mile Classic.
On Sept. 18, the cross-country team raced in the 35th Annual Woodbridge Cross-Country Classic at the Orange County Great Park. Due to the large attendance the schools were categorized into four divisions: red, white, blue and gold. Red, of which Beverly was a part, and white teams ran Friday, and blue and gold teams ran Saturday.
In the boys varsity race, junior Jonathan Cohen took 11th place clocking in at 15:45.5, a school record for the course.
“It was really exciting to see how much faster I got since last year and break my own school record I set last season. It was my first time running under 16 minutes, and also my brother’s, so I was very proud of him,” Cohen said. “I was proud of all of my teammates for competing well and cheering me on, especially the girls team and Spencer Edelman. They cheered us on throughout the whole time we were running and made us run a lot faster.”
Also in the race was junior Jason Cohen, who placed 14th with a time of 15:58.7. Junior Shimon Dubner came in 32nd place at 16:18.2, while senior Mohamad Abi-Kenari placed 63rd at 16:55.3. These three runners’ times rank second, third and fourth, respectively, on Beverly’s All Time List for this course.
In the girls varsity race, the top Norman runners were Jillian Dveirin in 59th place at 20:47.0, Sydney Hanover in 63rd placed at 21:01.5 and Zoe Hinton at 22:32.7.
“Yesterday’s race was really good. We are really happy with the boys team performance. They are amazing. It is always nice to go to a huge meet and watch so many talented people race,” Dveirin said.
Cross-country’s next meet is Thurs., Sept. 24, at Kenneth Hahn Park in the Ocean League Cluster No. 1 meet.
