The JV baseball team continues a six game winning streak as they prepare to face Santa Monica on Tuesday, May 1. During their streak, Beverly has defeated Hawthorne, Morningside and Hillcrest, a visiting team from Utah. Their last loss was on March 31 against San Gorgonio. Beverly holds an overall record of 8-8-1.
In the team’s most recent matchups, they have defeated Morningside with a score of 20-0 on April 17, and again 9-7 in their following matchup on April 19 and Hawthorne 16-3 on April 24, accounting for three of their six games of the winning streak.
Coach David Cantrell credits the team’s hard work in practices and emphasis on fundamentals towards their solid record and hot streak.
“We’re always sticking to fundamentals… we want to keep it as simple as possible,” Cantrell said.
After starting the season with four straight losses, the team began to shape up their play in order to win games.
“We started the season with limited practice but after a few weeks it just started to come together,” second baseman Adam Steinberg said.
The team prepares to face Santa Monica on Tuesday, May 1 as they look to finish off their regular season. The team has five games left in their season and is optimistic that they can continue their winning streak.
Cantrell hopes that the team can finish with a record of 13-8-1, meaning they would need to win their next five games straight and end on an 11 game winning streak. He also plans on pushing the team more with encouragement and intensity in practices leading up to their final games.
This year’s JV team is also composed of many of the same players as last year’s frosh-soph team, which had only won three games in its entire season. Steinberg believed the team used last year’s failure in order to build on their success.
“We are a lot more focused this year,” Steinberg said. “We don’t want to have another dreaded season. We want to win.”
