The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), a group that is known for their hateful protests against homosexuality, Judaism and Islam, threatened the community with a anti-marriage equality picket of Beverly Hills High School as the theatre department ran a production of “The Laramie Project” years ago; however, the WBC never showed up. Tomorrow, the WBC will attempt once again to picket Beverly from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., according to an email blasted by superintendent Gary Woods.
On their website, it is stated that the WBC’s purpose for coming to Beverly is to “picket the sad and rotten, truly good-for-nothing children that matriculate to Beverly Hills High School. Silly rebels think they are children of privilege, but they are children of the filth mongers and pervert pushers, the inventors of evil things.”
They claim to be non-violent, though according to Dr. Woods, BHPD will be there for the duration of the protest to ensure that it does not interfere with school activities.
Some students at Beverly do not feel that the church should be allowed near campus, though the Church plans to protest legally.
“It’s 2015, this shouldn’t happen anymore,” sophomore Lexie Ravaei said.
The school promotes inattention to the WBC.
“Honestly, if you just ignore them, then they don’t get anything out of it; they just want a reaction out of us,” junior Daniel Nourafshan said.
Students are encouraged to avoid and not provoke the protesters.
