On Friday, May 1, the deadline to commit to most colleges, a Pennant Party will be held in the College Center during lunch.
Dean of College Admissions AhYoung Chi sees May 1 a day to honor students as they begin their transition out of high school.
“It’s a day where we get to celebrate what’s coming in the future,” Chi said.
Cookies and drinks will be served, and students will be provided with art supplies to create their personal college pennant. The completed pennants will be displayed on the board outside of House A.
“Making the decision of where to go is tough for a lot of students, so we want to finalize it by putting it up on the wall and have everyone enjoy it for the next year,” she said. “It’s really just a way to spend time with your peers and make an announcement of where you’re going, and celebrate the hard work that went into getting there.”
Regardless of students’ plans for the next year, Chi encourages everyone to attend and decorate a pennant.
“I want to celebrate everyone’s future,” Chi said. “Some students are doing gap years, and I don’t want them to miss out on this just because they aren’t going to a physical college.”
Chi feels May 1 is an important milestone for seniors in high school.
“May 1 is the day in your senior year that you know is coming up and it’s a big day,” she said, “You’ve made your decision and now you have APs and you graduate. There’s so much to look forward to.”
