After completing the first part of the Los Angeles County Competition, the AcaDeca competition team reflects on the opening of their competition season and looks forward to finishing the tournament next weekend. Scores will be announced for both the subjective and objective events on Feb. 11.
The competition took place at El Rancho High School last Saturday, Jan. 31, where the students were tested in the public speaking, interview and essay subjects.
“The competition was exciting and nerve-racking at the same time. There were many teams from schools all around the LA region,” senior Jonathan Gunn said. “It was more or less the same as last year; the only slight difference was they had a rigid format for the interview this year.”
Based on all the practice put in by the students throughout the school year, Gunn believes that the team was well-prepared and did well at this first phase of the competition.
“I think the team members and I performed to the utmost of our abilities. Given all the practice we put into our speeches, interviews and essays, I would say that means we did pretty well,” Gunn said.
Senior Aleks Recupero feels that the event was a great experience, especially as it was her first time at the county competition.
“I thought it was an amazing experience. We all had a great time giving speeches on topics that we were passionate about. Being my first time at county, it was much more than I expected,” Recupero said. “I really enjoyed the adrenaline that came with the competition. Now, we are looking forward to next week for the objective competition.”
The team will return to El Rancho High School this Saturday, Feb. 6, and will compete in the remaining seven subjects of art, economics, literature, math, music, science and social science with regards to this years theme of India.
