Finishing the season with a win, the varsity wrestling team beat Santa Monica High School 51-27 on Tuesday, Jan. 30. The team won seven of the eight dual meets this year and had several individual tournament placements throughout the season.
“It was a combination of discipline, drive and conditioning throughout the season that brought us to victory,” senior Jack Schulman said.
Despite their win, junior captain Daniel Heller believes that the team can improve.
“I’m glad we won, but I feel that we should have won certain matches. There are a lot of things we can improve on, and that will happen with time. Our guys just need to wrestle smarter and believe in their capability,” he said.
With the amount of work they have put in, there is no doubt in Heller’s mind about the dedication each wrestler has for the sport.
“The level of dedication that our guys have every day has allowed us to have success this season. Everybody cares a lot and has put in tons of work over the summer, preseason and during this season,” Heller said. “All I can ask of our guys is that they maintain the same level of passion through post season and on to next year, and create a tradition of winning.”
Going into league finals, which take place on Feb. 8 in the Swim Gym at 10 a.m., senior Jan Reyes hopes the team can continue through postseason with the same level of success.
“Overall the season was very good, and our team is extremely dedicated to this sport,” Reyes said. “We all want to see each other succeed.”
