The varsity boys golf team won 235-292 against Culver City at Rancho Park Golf Course in their first match of the season. To win in golf, once a player has teed off, he are recorded every other time they hit their ball resulting in one point; however, a team or player must have the least amount of points in order to win.
“We played well enough to beat Culver by a large margin, but it was definitely not our best team score. It was pouring rain which made the conditions even worse, and the greens were a lot slower than normal,” sophomore Will Liner said.
“I think we can make CIF if the players start to work hard, whether that be in the weight room, or extra hours on the putting green, we have a shot at it,” Liner said.
Sophomore Spencer Deutsch shot the lowest score, a 39, for both schools and is content with his result.
“[I think] this season will probably go really well if we practice more purposefully,” Deutsch said.
Deutsch and other underclassmen also surprised co-captain Robert Sher.
“I hoped to play better, but we got the win and that is what matters. I shot more than I expected, but Spencer was really able to step up,” Sher said.
In his fourth year on the team, Sher is hopeful for a successful season and is excited to learn more about the overall potential of the underclassmen.
“The underclassmen stepped up and shot lower scores than both [senior co-captain AJ Wolken] and I, which was impressive,” Sher said.
Sher and co-captain AJ Wolken are both excited to see where the season leads and whether or not they qualify for CIF.
“It felt amazing to play as a senior captain…it was a great honor,” Sher said. “Winning the first match was a great way to start off the season and hopefully we make it to CIF.”
Liner will be “pushing my teammates to make sure they stay on task and show that they really care about making CIF this year.”
