The soccer program and Tower Research Foundation are holding their annual “Imagine A Cure” charity game on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. Heading into the event, the soccer team has already raised $6,000 and hopes to raise as much as last year, which was 13,000.
The varsity boys and girls soccer teams will have matches against the St. Bernard Vikings. Girls varsity will kick off the first game against the Vikings at 3:00 p.m.
“This particular game is truly unique in high school sports and we are extremely proud of it.
Almost everyone has been affected by cancer in one way or another and our soccer programs at Beverly are truly making a difference,” girls soccer coach Ryan Franks said.
Players on both teams are kicking in honor of someone they know who has been affected by cancer.
“I’m playing for my grandmother who is a survivor, and for all my teammates and their families who have been affected by cancer,” senior Ellie Ferd said.
Ferd explains that every year, the team’s energy is strong during the game.
“Everyone’s always excited and ready to play. We’re all so proud to take the game we love and use it to help others,” Ferd said.
Varsity captain Kayla Shadgoo is playing in honor of her aunt, great uncle and grandma. Keeping all of them in mind keeps Shadgoo motivated throughout the game.
“My favorite part about playing in the charity game is knowing I’m playing in honor of a cause. I am combining my passion while trying to help raise money for a cause,” Shadgoo said.
Boys varsity soccer player senior Sami Yates sees the game as a chance to make his late grandfather proud.
“The charity game is important to me because my grandfather died of cancer. My family wasn’t financially stable at the time, so I hope this game could possibly help other families who are going through the same thing,” Yates said. “I’m dedicating this game to my grandfather because he was never able to see my soccer games, so I want to make sure that when I play on Saturday, I’m going to give my everything for him.”
