BREAKING:
A small fire that broke out on campus near the oil rig has just been contained, the Beverly Hills Police Department reported.
The fire was limited to a flair unit, a tool used to burn off excess oil well gases, that is located on the softball field, a statement from Beverly Hills Fire Deputy Chief Joe Matsch said.
At around 5 p.m., smoke began to billow from the oil rig, senior Ryan Biehl said. After his friend, senior Penelope LaPaglia, posted about the fire on Snapchat, Biehl and his brother, who were standing across the street from the soccer field, walked closer to find “a lot of smoke” coming from the well and “a ton” of fire trucks and police cars.
Sophomore Sawyer Grijalva was on campus looking for her lunchbox when she noticed smoke coming from the track area. She went to the track to go take pictures and saw a “big vent pipe that was sticking out of the ground” that had smoke coming from it. 
“At one point there were flames shooting out of it like three feet coming out of the top,” she said. “Mr. Mead was screaming to clear the track. They made us leave the premises and because of that, I couldn’t get my lunchbox. The firefighters showed up and put it out quickly…by the time we left the fire was basically out.” 
Freshman Tristan Gomez was at Horizon Media when she looked out the window, seeing smoke coming from the campus.  “Guys I think the school’s on fire,” she wrote on her Snapchat story as a caption to a video zooming in on the smoke. Gomez was “kinda shocked” but wasn’t too alarmed. 
By 5:30 p.m. the fire was “under control,” Biehl said.
Everyone is safe, the threat was “mitigated” from spreading and that an investigation on the fire is “continuing,” Mastch and BHUSD said in a statement issued an hour after the fire was contained.
