In boys varsity volleyball’s two most recent matches, it defeated Inglewood High School in all three of its home games on Thursday, March 21 and Santa Monica High School on Tuesday April 10 three out of four games. The team beat Inglewood 25-11, 27-25 and 25-14.

In the Inglewood game, Captain Eli Lloyd was impressed with his team’s performance.

“Jacob Rost played well off the bench, as did Matt Sater,” he said.

Some JV players, such as outside hitter Ethan Lew, substituted for some varsity players who were allegedly being punished for not showing up to practice on Wednesday, March 20, a staff-development day. The game marked Lew’s first time playing for the varsity team.

“I was kind of nervous,” he said, “but I felt I did pretty good because I focused on my basics, such as passing and completing my defensive duties.”

The win against Samo was historic for the team; it was the first time they have beaten Samo in eight years.

Coach Von Wright noted the team’s ability to work well together.

“We came together as a team and executed our individual tasks to become a cohesive unit,” Wright said.

Though the teams are of comparable quality, Beverly “wanted it more, and…got it,” the coach said. His team does, however, need to work on its communication.

“The skill level is there but the confidence level may not be fully whole just yet,” he said.

Wright is confident that his team will fully restore Beverly’s volleyball glory.

“They could be the ones to bring Beverly a lot of pride and well deserved, long-lost, recognition in competitive volleyball,” he said.

Backup setter Matthew Sater, though proud of his team, is dismayed by some of the school’s overly proud rituals.

“I will be slapping the first person to say FSGM,” Sater said.

The team will next compete in a home game today against Culver City followed by the San Pedro Tournament on Saturday, April 13.
