The National Honors Society (NHS) is planning to participate as a team in a volunteer walk for cancer, Relay for Life, at El Rodeo school on May 4.
Relay for Life is an organized community fundraising walk, where teams can raise money for a specific cause to help and celebrate the lives of people.
This year, NHS is raising money for American Cancer Society, which will use the money for medical research purpose. In this event, NHS is planning to focus on activism and engagement more than just donation.
“The goal of this walk is to get maximum participation in the cause, rather than simply donating to the cause. The students that choose to participate will have the opportunity to bond with the people spreading the cause and even with each other,” NHS Secretary India Halm said.
“We expect all NHS members to be fully active in participation in this event, as well as to bring their friends, family members and others to participate, enjoy and raise money for the cause,” NHS Vice President Remy Jamal-Eddine said.
NHS is hoping participants gain both insight into malignant disease and pride of the accomplishment of such a selfless task.
“As an NHS officer, I expect my fellow members to gain a better understanding of the cause and become inspired to continue to help any good causes. This generation is responsible for the future of our world, and the NHS is here to help participate in bettering our world one step at a time,” Halm said
The organization, Relay for Life, has raised $24,93.50 from 18 teams and 91 participants so far. As a team, the NHS is hoping to add contribution to this action by selling American Cancer Society wristbands for $2.
Any individual can personally donate or dedicate a luminaria through Relay for Life website as well.
“Any students or family members who are not NHS members are also welcomed to join this meaningful event,” NHS Advisor Dan Moroaica said.
The event will start at El Rodeo School (605 N. Whittier Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210) at 9:00 a.m. on May 4, 2013.
