On February 19, two juniors participated in a Homeless Aid fundraiser to help support the homeless community.. Students were lined up on a late-start waiting for a morning treat.
In Los Angeles today, the number of individuals affected by hunger and homelessness each year is expanding. In 2023 alone, more than 650,000 individuals in the US experienced homelessness, which is a 12% increase from 2022.
“I wanted to help support because homelessness is a huge issue in Los Angeles and I want to support in every way possible,” junior Natalia Torres, vice president, said.
They sold brownies, cookies, donuts and Arizona tea.
“This is something that I’m very passionate about, I always would love to help and would something I would love to do more with in the future,” junior and club president Hallema Bakhda, said.
All donations were sent to Step Up Charity. Step Up delivers compassionate support to people experiencing serious mental health issues, and people who are experiencing chronic homelessness, to help recover, stabilize and integrate into the community.
“Both of my parents have previously been homeless, so as a kid I would always love to help and this is something I enjoy doing and this is the main reason why I started this club, so I am looking forward to the opportunity and will continue to spread awareness!” President Bakhda said.
This was the first year of the club, and their first fundraiser, which was a success.
