From Apr. 10 through 12, The Norman Performance Company presented their spring musical “Mary Poppins” in the Saban Theater. The musical was originally a book, which was written in 1934 by Australian-British author P.L. Travers.
Directed by Ms. Samantha Howard, the drama and theater teacher, the musical is centered on two young children, Jane and Michael Banks. (played by Danielle Gilad and Ella Giroux). It includes Mary Poppins herself (played by Braydn Prisand), a nanny who possesses magical powers such as levitation, who sweeps into the Bank’s home on Cherry Tree Lane and teaches the children lessons through songs.
Beverly’s alumnus Richard Sherman, along with his brother Robert Sherman, wrote the famous song and lyrics for the original musical released in 1964. Some of the most memorable songs written by the brothers include: “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” The music was conducted by Will Johnson and performed by the student orchestra along with guest musicians.
The acting, which also earned positive feedback from the audience is another of the many factors which made the musical so well done. The actors, such as Prisand, Gilad and Giroux, embodied their characters in the musical perfectly, which shaped the play smoothly.
The theater students spent months dedicating their time and energy into making the musical come to life, the crew did a phenomenal job. Their hard work and dedication which was clear in their performance added a unique touch to the musical and made it even more memorable for the audience.
“Doing this show meant a lot for me since it is my final performance here at Beverly, and I had a blast,” senior Sophia Diamond said.
