The Journalism class here at Beverly is a place where students can learn to think critically, interact with others and change the perspectives of others. For those who are passionate about writing, news reporting, or creativity in general, journalism might be a proper fit for an elective choice.
Through much efficient practice, students ultimately learn in depth how to report news, conduct interviews and observe and reflect on their community.
As articles are due weekly, the progress of journalism students is displayed through gradual improvement. Students learn how to enhance their articles through effective feedback given by class editors and Ms. Riley Galvan, the journalism teacher.
Additionally, the class can offer a wider range of life skills in addition to academic skills. Teamwork, responsibility and communication are vital to being a successful journalist. Students taking the course must have thorough conversations with others, take guidance well from others and get work done in a timely manner. These skills can benefit one in any future career, not just journalism.
For anyone interested in writing, the media, storytelling, or sharing their view on topics, jurnalism is the perfect place to start. It is a class that challenges and inspires students to look deeper into the world around them.
As well, students have the opportunity to write articles on school events such as sports games, food fairs, Color Wars, senior sunset, etc.
Students who took the class during the 2024-2025 school year have expressed their admiration towards journalism, with junior Jordan Edward sharing that she “[feels] like it’s a good class to look into what’s going on at school and finding ways to get creative writing about it.”
Freshman Astrid Franks also shared her opinions on the class, stating, “I would recommend this class to others because it’s a fun way to get involved with school, and there is a lot of freedom to write about certain interests.”
Journalism is a suitable class for all who enjoy expressing their feelings, opinions and news through writing and getting the perspective of others!
