The 2014 spring musical was announced during lunch to a group of approximately 50 students in the Salter Family Theater. With band teacher Bill Bradbury and technical director Annie Teri on hand, Herb Hall, drama teacher, revealed that the musical would be “The Wiz.”

A “soul” adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” “The Wiz” won seven Tony Awards in 1975, including Best Musical, and was released as a movie in 1978 (though Hall said that “watching the movie” was “the worst possible thing to do”). Originally a musical with an all African-American cast, the show will be adapted for any students to perform.

Senior Anthony Lofaso, who played Richard Hannay in the school’s production of “The 39 Steps” earlier this year, described himself as being “pleased by the announcement and excited to begin the audition process.”

Stay tuned for further coverage of “The Wiz” in the upcoming months.
