Once only thought of as stereotypical Chinese takeout or pizza delivery, the food-delivery scene has evolved due to UberFresh and Postmates, two of the leaders in the speedy gourmet food-delivery service.
Postmates is a company that was created in 2011 by three New Yorkers: Sam Street, Sean Plaice and Bastian Lehmann. First only serving the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, Postmates delivered on-demand delivery of Manhattan’s finest restaurants to anyone.
Four years later, the company now services Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Miami, Denver and San Francisco. Postmates first began servicing Beverly Hills and the greater Los Angeles area in the Spring of 2014.
Using Postmates is simple. Customers must download the Postmates app, enter their location and credit card information and, then by a list of restaurants in their area available for delivery.
Postmates has grown to extreme popularity among students and foodies all over Los Angeles. Postmates delivers from some of the premier restaurants in the city. My favorites include Sugarfish, Cafe Gratitude, Madeo Restaurant, Katsuya, Native Foods Cafe,Bay Cities Italian Deli and Bakery, and Il Pastaio.
However, what really makes Postmates unique from other delivery services in LA is their “Fleet Pick” system. Depending on your location in your given city, Postmates reccomneds their Fleet Picks for you. Every day, there are 12 new restaurants available to order from.
Some of the most delicious Beverly Hills and Los Angeles picks include: Joan’s on Third, Blue Plate, Tender Greens, 800 Degrees Pizza, Lemonade, Gracias Madre and Pressed Juicery.
As for New York City, my favorite Postmates options include the famous Dominique Ansel Bakery, Sushi of Gari, Rubirosa, Black Seed Bagel,Momofuku Milk Bar, Dos Caminos Soho and The Mercer Kitchen. New York City’s version of Fleet Pick is called $4.99 Favorites. The best NYC $4.99 options are Baked By Melissa, S’Mac Murray Hill, Sasabune, Magnolia Bakery West Village and Waffles and Dinges.
Uber, on the other hand, has gained fame over the last year in several cities across the country. It’s also become a phenomenon at Beverly. Uber is a car service that, by downloading the app, can give you access to a ride most anywhere.
Naturally, Uber has jumped on the food delivery trend, but in a simpler way than Postmates, with their launch of UberFresh.
The service is available for lunch from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and for dinner between 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. daily. If you’re in the coverage area, which includes the Beverly Hills, the Westside and West Hollywood, a small fork and knife icon will show up to the far right in your regular Uber app.
However, unlike Postmates, Uber cannot be expected to have the availability of the full menu or the 24/7 schedule. UberFresh only has a select number of items from each restaurant that can be ordered.
My favorite UberFresh deliveries include Bottega Louie, Il Tramezzino, The Church Key, True Food Kitchen and All About The Bread.\
According to the UberFresh Blog, the company plans to expand its coverage in other parts of Los Angeles and later into other cities.
