“Almost, Maine,” a performance put on by the Theater Arts Workshop (TAW) Acting Emphasis Class, is a beautifully directed array of romantic comedy scenes and vignettes.
Taking place in a small, starry, fictional town of Almost, Maine, the story unfolds, presenting several unique stories, all lingering on the promise and pain of love.
Each scene reflects a problem between two people, some in a romantic relationship with one another, some single, some merely friends. Regardless of the relationship between the two people, each scene focuses on love, in one way or another. An example of which can be illuminated in the scene where two friends sit outside and recall the worst dates they have ever been on. Another scene focuses on a young girl coming back to her hometown with hopes of reconnecting with an old love.
Juxtaposing the more complex and more difficult to follow performance of the Shakespearean play, “The Bomb-itty of Errors,” put on the by the TAW College Prep class earlier this semester, the TAW Acting Emphasis class’s “Almost, Maine” takes on a modern day narrative, using more colloquial language and relatable experiences. Because of the increased simplicity of language and general themes, the play is more accessible to the student body.
One of the most commonly overlooked, yet incredibly important aspects of student acting is achieved in this play. The actors are able to express the raw emotion that their characters are feeling. The chance of leaving this production, not having been emotionally moved is slim. Beverly’s production of “Almost, Maine” is able convey the frustration and angst the characters feel against one another, and by doing so, the actors are believable as their characters.
“Almost, Maine” will be performed at the Salter theater on Nov. 16, 17, and 18 at 7:00 pm and on Nov. 20 at 4:00 pm. Admission is $5 for ASB card holders and children age 12 and younger, while general admission is $10.
