President Donald Trump is now the 47th president of the United States of America. For those that don’t like him and his political beliefs, it’s vital to have an understanding of the reasoning behind his Tariff plans for Canada.
With President Trump back in office, he has wasted no time implementing his political beliefs and commitments that he promised during the election. Weeks before the election, President Trump was promising that he would deport illegal immigrants, end the war in Ukraine, stop transgender women from participating in women’s sports and implement tariffs on Mexico, China and Canada.
If you are unfamiliar with tariffs, it’s when a government would implement a tax on goods being shipped in and out of their country. This can increase the price on business and consumers from foreign countries. I think tariffs can be a good negotiation tool against other countries that are working against that country. Tariffs are used to bring business back to the country implementing the tariffs.
“We rely largely on a lot of key industries with regards to things like our trade with Canada, and just more generally, our trade with other countries,” senior Jacob Treiman said.
One commitment that many people were shocked by was the 25% tariffs on imported and exported goods with neighboring countries Canada and Mexico. When questioned about the tariffs, President Trump said, “On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on all products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous open borders.”
President Trump’s reasoning behind the tariffs is to get neighboring countries to fulfill their duty to protect their countries and ours. President Trump wants Canada to close their borders next to America so that Illegal immigrants don’t cross without the proper paperwork and background checks. Canada’s response to President Trump’s demands was to implement a 25% tariff on American goods. What the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau soon understood was that was not a viable option. The U.S. imported about $435 billion Cdn of Canadian goods from January and September of 2024. The Tariffs could destroy the Canadian economy if placed.
When President Trump was going to issue the tariff, Canada decided to listen to America’s demands and implemented the $1.3 billion border plan that would stop the spread of illegal immigrants from crossing. It would target fentanyl trafficking across the border and Canada would officially designate cartels as “terrorists” organizations. Personally, I believe this is the best action to take for the betterment of the United states. With Canada protecting the border it ensures the safety of American citizens from drugs and criminals.
“I think Canada’s response to securing the border is exactly what Trump wanted and it’s good for America as well as Canada, because there’s no tariff and then there’s no illegal immigrants crossing the borders,” Senior Noam Albou said.
Canada’s excluding orders to close and protect the border, President Trump has decided to delay the tariffs for 30 days. This shows that President Trump was using the tariffs as a negotiation tacit rather than economic solution.
Something America has been missing for the past four years is the lack of American citizens coming first when issuing political decisions. Whether or not you support President Trump’s policy on Illegal immigrants living in America and the economics behind tariffs, closing and protecting the border from the cartel and drug trafficking is something I support.
