On Jan 13, BHUSD experienced an internet outage that lasted the entire day. Students and staff were left without wifi after an external power outage at El Rodeo Elementary.
BHUSD released a statement that said, “Our IT staff responded immediately to restore services and are actively reviewing additional safeguards and backup solutions to further prevent disruptions of this nature in the future.”
Even though the issues were apparent for most of the school day, students and staff were able to persevere. Hotspots were used to display schoolwork on ViewSonics, people wrote on whiteboards or other solutions were found.
The Audio Production class was greatly affected since the class is completely online-based. Teacher Alex Brietman said, “…it made it very difficult for us… we improvised, and they made a song using no resources from the internet.”
Students like senior Mica Berg also planned to use the library’s printers that day. “I got to school early to print out worksheets for AP Lit since my home printer is broken. I got there and was kind of freaking out over not being able to print, but was grateful when my friend gave me a copy of their own,” Berg said.
As a district that is mainly online, one would assume that Wifi issues would throw off the entire course of the day. However, this event showed Beverly’s constant resilience to obstacles. We find a way to push through and make anything work.
