On May 21, BHEF Honors were held at Beverly Canon Gardens. As part of BHEF Honors, they brought back the Apple Awards in the form of an awards ceremony and party for the first time in 10 years.
Apple Awards are presented to recognize teachers and staff who work hard and are innovative. In recent years, they were awarded at the district-wide back-to-school staff meetings.
This year, the community gathered to celebrate the dedicated and committed teachers, staff and supporters of BHUSD together once again.
Principals from each school selected the honorees who they felt deserved recognition for their dedication and passion for teaching.
BHEF Honors had several categories of awards and recognitions at the event, including the Apple awards, BHEF innovative teachers, BHEF honorees, which are community members who strongly support the schools, whether through donations, their time and efforts to improve the schools, or programs they have helped to facilitate and BHUSD retirees.
The awards kicked off with a speech by Tiffany Davis, the Director of Development and Operations at BHEF. Davis said, “BHEF has a mission of elevating educational excellence by funding innovative initiatives and enrichment opportunities that are not funded through the district budget across all BHUSD schools.” Attendees were encouraged to donate via a silent auction held throughout the night.
The program kicked off by announcing BHEF honorees Gaby Reims Alexander, Michael Libow and Frederic Zemmour, who each gave a quick speech and took photographs with their awards. Davis then announced that the president of BHEF, Tina Weiner’s term is up, and she will be stepping down in June, and thanked her for her dedication. Weiner said, “This event is a result of different community teams coming together to acknowledge everyone who’s so special to our district. We had a meeting in the fall, we had PTA council, BHEA, BHEF and the district all come together and say ‘we want to resurrect an event like this’”.
Beverly Vista was recognized as a California Distinguished School. Next, teachers who received the innovative awards were called, then the retirees, and lastly the Apple Awardees. After the awards, attendees were encouraged to mingle, and dinner and drinks were passed out.
This event marked a significant milestone as the return of a celebration of talented, hardworking teachers and community members. BHEF Honors and the return of the Apple Awards are another example of an era of enhancing BHUSD by improving campuses and recognizing the teachers and administration who help elevate the district’s quality and performance.
